Workshop

Bill Fretz

Fretz workshop shapes

Fluted Shapes

Bucksport Harbor

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The Fretz Workshops are intensive learning experiences as only six places are available for each workshop.  Each project is designed to master a type of hammer with a stake and what it does.  The workshop starts with a simple project for hammer control and advances to more complicated shapes with each exercise. The goal is that each jeweler will learn skills that can then be used with each person’s personal design exploration. The skills taught will be useful to both the beginner and will also challenge the experienced jeweler who has previously not been exposed to hammer and stake techniques.

 WORK SHOP PROJECTS

Metal forming is what a Fretz Workshop is about. Raising and planishing concave and convex shapes opens a door into the long history of metalsmithing and the potential of creating interesting shapes.

The first projects are about hammer control and what happens as the metal is sunk or compressed into and onto various stakes. The following projects go from simple curves to the possibilities of combining different hammers and stakes to make more complex forms.

The work possible with hammers and stakes is so varied the workshop will focus on cuff bracelets to start and use this genre to explore basic metal forming concepts. Building on the first few projects, the workshop will progress to fluting metal into free form shapes. Once the basics are mastered, multiple variations open for individual explorations into ancient techniques with modern applications.

Projects are made with malleable brass tubing. This saves cutting and soldering time so the hammering techniques are the main focus.
